Our recipe for gentle and nutritious homemade barber's foam
Here you will find our recipe for the best homemade shaving foam we could imagine, which is also made exclusively from 100% natural ingredients that pamper the skin during shaving.
You can use the foam for both body and face shaving.
You will need:
- Soapberry
- Bowl and stick blender/electric whisk
- Natural starch – e.g. guar gum, xanthan gum or corn starch
- Delicious nourishing oil – e.g. olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil
- Possibly. a fragrant essential oil
- A closed container for storage
Here's how you do it:
1.
Take your bag of soapberries into the kitchen and follow our super simple recipe for basic soapberry liquid soap .
It is super easy to make and is just the equivalent of 10 whole soapberries boiled in 1 liter of water for 20 minutes.
It only requires a pot of water and soap berries. And while it simmers, you can get the other things ready.
Note:
If you just want to make a bit of shaving soap and not other homemade products from soap berries, you can also easily boil a small amount of soap at a time – e.g. 5 berries for 5 dl water, 2.5 berries for 2.5 dl water, etc.
This is because it is a 100% natural product that can go bad if you don't manage to use it all after approx. one week. So just cook the amount you can manage to use.
However, we love to boil a whole liter and then make shaving soap, shampoo and homemade cleaning products at the same time. You can see all our soapberry recipes here.
This is what your liquid soap looks like when it is finished boiling.
2.
After you drain and cool the soap base, add a natural starch to give the shaving foam a thicker consistency. Otherwise it is liquid like water.
Add approx. 1 tsp. starch per 1/2 liter basic soap.
We recommend guar gum or xanthan gum , but you can also use corn flour or agar agar. All these ingredients are completely natural and can e.g. can be found in your local health food store or in Matas.
3.
Add a delicious nourishing oil to your homemade shaving foam to pamper the skin.
Use 5 tbsp. oil per ½ liter basic soap.
We have good experience with e.g. olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil or coconut oil. But you can also easily use other delicious oils such as avocado oil or argan oil.
You just have to experiment which oil works best for your skin in relation to where you will use the shaving cream.
Eg. there may be a difference in how oily an oil your skin likes on the legs as opposed to the face. Choose your own favorite oil that your skin loves.
4.
This step can be omitted if you have sensitive skin or a perfume allergy.
But if you want a wonderful scent in your homemade shaving foam, you can add a few drops of delicious essential oil. Tea tree oil is good for shaving foam, as it is both antibacterial and soothing on the skin.
Otherwise, you can try our ready-made mixtures of delicious aromatic essential oils , which we use ourselves when we make shaving foam.
5.
Make sure the mixture is in a large bowl or pot, because now it needs to be whipped into a delicious creamy foam. Feel free to use a stick blender, hand mixer or similar to bind the oil and the liquid soap together so that it becomes an emulsified and super soft and luxurious shaving cream.
6.
Next, pour your creamy shaving foam into a glass or other container with a lid. It is now ready for use.
Enjoy!
